Secrets To Managing Dry Black Hair

Natural black hair can be considered an advantage to those who have them. But sometimes it seems that having black hair is a constant battle against dryness, hair tangles and frizz.

It requires a lot of care or you’d end up with dry and damaged hair. This can come with a lot of challenge considering hundreds of hair care products on the market and coming up with the right choice can be quite tough and confusing. Trying to find the appropriate black hair styles and sticking to a maintenance regimen are not without their own hassles, too.

However, you can keep your black hair gorgeous and looking terrific with consistent care. Here are some secrets that you may find useful in managing dry black hair.

  1. Avoid getting exposed to sunlight and pollution every possible way you can. These two are the most significant nemesis of black hair and can do extensive damage. Over exposure of hair to dust and dirt may also result in split ends.
  2. You must wash your hair with a gentle and mild moisturizing shampoo regularly – but not overly wash it. Ideally, once or twice a week is the applicable regular shampoo schedule for natural black hair care. This is especially true for relaxed hair or any chemically processed hair straightener. Excessive washing can dry out relaxed hair even more. Make sure you have the suitable shampoo for your hair type. Needless to say, you have to choose the appropriate deep conditioner to pair with the shampoo.
  3. Back off from heavy hair products. Heavy lotions and creams may work on dry skin, but not with hair. Greasy and oily hair products may tend to clog hair follicles resulting in an even drier hair and may cause other problems besides. Silicone-based hair products are the best options for use as daily hair moisturizers. Take note that the label may not actually say”silicone”; look out for “dimethicone” as part of the ingredients instead.
  4. Give your hair a break from frequent heat styling and minimize the use of blow dryers and flat irons as much as you could. Excessive and constant heat onslaught can make your hair lose moisture at the tips, which could lead to split ends and dry, dull and damaged look to your hair. Allow your hair time to recover and opt to use hot combs and rollers instead, which are less damaging.
  5. Diet absolutely plays an important role in preventing your black hair from getting dry. Foods with adequate amounts of nutrients are vital to keeping your hair vibrant and healthy. Drinking plenty of water can contribute to keep your hair shiny. You need to consume ample servings of food that are good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids to maintain a healthy scalp so that it is able to produce necessary natural oils to make your hair shine.
  6. Regular hot oil treatment can significantly help dry black hair restore its shine. A once-a-week regular hot oil treatment is recommended; or most especially before braiding your hair. This would make your hair easier to manage. Moreover, if you have to braid your hair, make sure you don’t do it too tightly as this places unnecessary stress to the hair, making it more fragile to breakage.
  7. Before going to bed, tie a loose plait and use satin pillowcase to help retain moisture in your hair.

Season after season your black hair suffers from dryness brought by different elements. Love your hair and take care of it. After all, it may be the dead cells of our body, but it’s also the biggest thing we fuss over.
